I would like to thank all of the Legionnaires who have and are participating in the Departments label programs whether they are the mid summer or Christmas programs. Your donations for these labels are used for our American Legion Programs.
If you have not applied for or renewed your free $1,000.00 LIT accidental death policy, now would be a good time to do so. Each Post has an enrollment card that you may fill out and send in or you may call LIT at 1-800-235-6943 or go directly to their web site at www.theLit.com/nocost and there is also a link to LIT in the Departments web site at www.alaskalegion.org. Do not miss this benefit.
Department receives many phone calls, letters, and e-mails from Post with questions, which is fine as we are here to serve the post to the extent we are able. The problem arises when we receive questions for which Department or National has no input or jurisdiction. As post questions arise, realize that Department welcomes membership, programs, and veterans service questions. Department cannot assist with elections, or lounge issues, or concerns that are of a civil nature. Again, neither Department nor National has any jurisdiction in these areas. Those questions must be addressed and resolved at the post or in some cases, with civil authorities. An important point for each post to remember is that The American Legion charters posts, not bars . In addition, if a Legionnaire or Post has a question, they should not pose that question directly to National, all National does is refer those questions back to Department.
With the Southeast District convention on the horizon, February 5-6, 2010, Ketchikan, AK, Western District Convention, March 5-6, 2010, Fairbanks, AK, and Department Convention, April 22-24, 2010, Kenai, AK. and you are interested in running for an office at one of these conventions, you should have your Post endorsement, or letter of intent completed and mailed out. Your post should have their first call for elections this month. Whether you may be interested in running for a position within your Post, District, or Department please take time to read and understand what that position entails. You should NOT be running for a position just to wear the hat , it should be because your care and know that you can accomplish the mission .
